After Dunkirk’s immense box office success in 2017, there was last year’s Midway, a fine-enough movie that almost no one under the age of 50 saw, but still managed to make almost $60 million at the domestic box office. Speaking of Dunkirk, Greyhound seems to be the latest in a string of movies about naval operations in the second World War. It’s also worth noting that this is Hanks’ first return to World War II since 1998’s Saving Private Ryan - unless you count his narration in the mini-series The Pacific, which we do not. In fact, it sort of looks like he was jealous of Kenneth Branagh’s scene-chewing Commander in Dunkirk, and decided to give himself a whole movie to play that part, which honestly sounds great. The last time was 2011’s Larry Crowne, a misbegotten romcom which Hanks also directed, but it looks like he’s giving himself a little bit more to do here. This isn’t the first time Hanks has written a movie he’s starred in, but it’s been a while. From there, all naval-hell breaks loose, waves crash into boats, torpedoes are fired, and Tom Hanks makes that worried-but-brave face that he’s so good at. While the boat is on patrol, it’s ambushed by a pack of Nazi U-boats. destroyer in the early days of World War II.
